The moving process can get quite expensive, depending on the moving services that you might require. There are a lot of services that professional residential movers can render and their sum can be quite significant indeed. You might want to know what are the cheapest moving solutions out there. Well, we are going to provide you with some of the most common ones, as well as explain how best to utilize them. If you want your move to be on the cheap, then feel free to check out our:
List of cheap ways to move
Most of the items on this list are pretty self-explanatory but don’t worry, we will be going into further detail anyway. We will explain how each of these ways will help you save money on your relocation. These ways are:
- Renting out a truck
- Various DIY solutions
- Ship your boxes
- Use the train or a bus
- Utilize a storage container
- Sell everything (and buy everything)
Phew, that is quite a bit, isn’t it? Alright, let’s get a bit further into it and see how exactly are you saving money.

One of the cheapest moving solutions – Renting out a truck
First and foremost, if you want to cut down on the costs, you will be renting a truck out. However, what you need to be wary of are some additional costs. There is fuel, of course, but there are also various taxes and tolls as well as travel and insurance expenses. You need to add all these to the final price of your truck rental before you can see how much money you’ve actually saved.
It will still be saving, mind you, because the moving company needs to account for all that, as well, when providing you their moving quotes Massachusetts. But you will be doing a lot more work, be prepared for that. You will need to load and unload the truck by yourself and you will need to drive, as well. However, the good part is that you are not paying for anyone to do that for you. And that is a considerable saving.
Various DIY solutions
There are some pretty good alternatives to moving services, where you are doing all of the work. If so, make sure to stay healthy while moving! Some of them include you packing and unpacking the items into a container and have the moving company ship that container to your new home.
The fact of the matter is that these solutions are highly dependant on your circumstances. The best thing to do is to figure out if you can take advantage of such solutions or not. Try to have some time that you can devote to researching this particular subject.
Another one of the cheapest moving solutions – Ship your boxes
You can take advantage of parcel service shipping (U.S. Postal service, for example) if you have only a handful of small boxes. The more boxes you have, the less ideal it becomes. The whole problem is that the parcel shipments base their price on the weight and/or size of the shipment. If you have heavy or large items, the price shoots up rather fast.
However, a smart mover will utilize this in any case, by shipping only some clothes, papers or even small boxes full of books. You can do this regardless of anything else, and save some money by doing so!

Use the train (or a bus)
If you don’t have a motorized vehicle of your own, one of the cheapest ways to get to your new home include taking a train or a bus. There are always some promotions going on and you can get a really good price on the fare if you reserve it well ahead of time. Do note that the travel times are always longer.
There will be weight and baggage restrictions, however, so you can’t really carry your entire household with you. Usually, its around one hundred pounds of weight that you are allowed to carry with you. It all depends on the carrier, really.
Utilize a storage container
One of the cheapest moving solutions is utilizing a storage container for the transport of your items. Of course, if you can get it on your terms. Basically, you are looking for a limited-time-use storage container which you will fill and have it moved to your new home.
The problem is that most companies that offer portable containers will try to charge you for a minimum of 30 days for them. If you want to save money on storage, then it might be perfect for you but the fact of the matter is that you will most likely not need that container for more than a couple of days.
See if there is a company that is willing to provide you a portable storage container without that 30-day restriction. This is my advice.

Perhaps one of the best and cheapest moving solutions – Sell everything! (And buy everything)
Your moving costs vary greatly on the weight and size of the items that you wish to move. But how about not having any items to move? Then your move will really be on the cheap! Actually, this might very well be the best idea, depending on your needs and circumstances.
The general idea is that if you are moving out of a really small home, you may not have many items that are of great value or that will even fit into the new place. Or perhaps you are moving into an already furnished place. Regardless of the reason, selling all of your possessions and buying new ones at the new place might actually save you money on moving expenses.
It all depends on whether you can find good deals. Both for selling your items and the acquisition of new ones at the new home. If you are confident that you can trade well, then this is an absolutely perfect solution for you. Trading is an art and some people are really good at it. Maybe you are one of those people, why not give it a go?
