How to reduce moving expenses

How To - August 21, 2019

Knowing that you will have to move is a thought that could hunt you for many weeks, maybe even months. And yes, this is partly because moving is a complicated and time-consuming endeavor, but it’s mostly because relocation can leave your bank account in the red. Sometimes, moving costs Massachusetts can surpass all of your calculations, which will certainly have you wrecking your brain what to do next. But what if we told you that there are some ways to reduce moving expenses? We are by no means suggesting that they will make your relocation cheap, but they will make it more bearable. Interested to know? Then let’s get started!

The easiest way to significantly reduce moving expenses is by choosing affordable movers

Although, you have to realize that this is a double-edged sword. Your first instinct will surely be to find the cheapest moving company Natick MA (insert any other city here) which makes sense – up to a certain point. But you’ll have to learn to separate cheap from affordable. An affordable moving company will offer a great level of service but will probably be a local moving company as opposed to being a large, well-known name – hence the lower price. But a cheap moving company is almost always a fraudulent one. And how to know if a company is cheap and not affordable?

In the world we live in, money is always tight. So how can you make the situation better when moving?

Just compare their prices with the prices of other companies. Any company that gives you a significantly lower price than the competition is almost always bound to be fraudulent. And that’s the last thing you need, whether moving locally in Massachusetts or long-distance.

Reducing moving services will also reduce moving costs

It absolutely makes sense that, if you opt for the basic relocation package, you’ll pay less than if you were to choose all the moving services a company offers. However, sometimes certain moving services are a must as they protect your safety during the move. For example, while you can pack on your own, you probably won’t be able to relocate a piano by yourself. Heavy and delicate objects require a professional touch, so do opt for piano movers and skip on packing services if you are short on cash.

Be strategic about the date of your move

You probably already know that summer is by far the most popular season for moving. But what you may not know is that it’s also the most expensive one. Now, we know that it won’t always be possible for you to pick the exact date of your move. But, when that is a possibility, always aim for:

  • A day from Monday-Friday
  • The moving day which will be in the middle of the month
  • A winter move

And yes – a winter move could come with a few challenges as you might miss the holiday celebrations and the weather could be bad. But you will manage to save a lot of money, which will certainly make up for all the disadvantages. After all, moving on a budget is never easy, and some complications are bound to follow.

It sure would be nice to spend the holidays with the family, but it would be even nicer to manage to lower your moving costs.

Find free moving supplies and reduce your moving expenses

Moving boxes, packing tape, protective packaging, dollies, moving straps – the list of supplies you’ll need for your move just goes on and on. You can imagine that brand new supplies could end up adding a significant amount to your final bill. But then again, moving supplies are necessary for any relocation. So what’s there to be done?

For starters, you can ask around whether anyone has any leftover cardboard boxes from the days when they were moving. You’ll be surprised how many sturdy boxes you’ll be able to find this way. Then, you can visit the supermarkets and bookstores in your vicinity and ask for the boxes they have to spare. And they will have dozens of them. Finally, you can always visit dollar stores for smaller supplies such as packing tape. The price will be as little as just one dollar!

Try to pull off a DIY relocation with some help from friends

While we are always the ones to propagate a move with professional help, we are also aware that it is not always an option for plenty of people. Make no mistake – a DIY relocation doesn’t have to end in ruin. It can actually be a fun and bonding experience as long as you have the right group of people by your side. And you certainly won’t be able to move without any help whatsoever, so start coming up with the names of friends to call. With friends by your side, you’ll manage to significantly reduce moving expenses as you won’t have to pay for movers.

Word to the wise: don’t forget to thank your friends for everything they are doing for you. You don’t have to pay them but you could certainly show your appreciation by treating them to a nice dinner, don’t you think?

Purge your belongings before moving

Some things are better left in the past, and the move you are about to go through represents the future – a brand new start. Not only would you be letting go of the past, but you would also reduce moving expenses by getting rid of your surplus items. A lot of moving companies charge based on the weight of the cargo you are transporting, so simple math will reveal that the fewer items you relocate, the lower the price of your move will be. And that’s the whole point of the story, right? Do this at least two weeks before your move and we promise you that you won’t have any regrets!
