Charities for donating extra belongings

Pre-Move Activities - August 14, 2019

There are not many feelings in this world that can compare to the feeling of doing something nice for someone else. And one of the best ways to help those in need is by donating stuff they need and you don’t anymore. After all, why would you throw away something that’s in a perfectly good working condition if you can already give it to someone else? And the best thing is that there are so many charities for donating extra belongings that you won’t have a problem finding one. Besides, by donating your items, you will also declutter your house, which is especially important when moving. In fact, it’s one of those things you must do before your local movers Massachusetts come knocking at your door, ready to start relocating your belongings.

The best charities for donating extra belongings

We would just like to clarify the meaning of ‘best’ here. First things first – there are no good and bad charities. Any situation where you help someone else is a good one.  Whether you decide to donate to kids, adults or animal shelters, you would certainly be making a change in the world for the better. These are just some of the most common charities we as experienced Worcester movers have heard people mention. Whichever you pick, you will be making a good choice.

Donating will make you feel great, as well as help people who really need it.

Feeding America

With millions of people struggling with food disparity in America, donating your items is a great way to help. Feeding America is one of the leading, non-profit charities in America that focuses on solving this issue to the extent that’s possible. When cleaning out your fridge before moving, and finding you have too many perishable and non-perishable items which you can’t use up, Feeding America is a great charity for donating your stuff. You would first have to call your local food bank to ask which items they need. Of course, you can always make a monetary donation. Every dollar matters, and you can donate as much as you can.

The Salvation Army

One of the most well-known charities on international scales is The Salvation Army. It’s certainly one of the best charities for donating extra belongings because it accepts everything – from vehicles, furniture, appliances to clothing and many other common household items. Of course, you have to bear in mind that these charities should not be seen as a dumpster for your old belongings, nor will they accept items that aren’t useful. You can’t get rid of your old batteries by donating them to The Salvation Army, but you can certainly help by giving your clothing. The ones you no longer use but are still in good condition, of course.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help people worldwide improve the place they call home. With that in mind, you can imagine that there isn’t a shortage of items you can donate. From surplus building materials to furniture, this charity accepts a wide array of items, making it one of the best charities for donating extra belongings. However, be careful – the charity doesn’t accept everything. It would be best to call and find out whether the items you want to give are acceptable. If they are, you can even arrange a pick-up of your items, saving yourself from a lengthy trip. Just bear in mind that all the items you want to donate have to be in good working condition. Others won’t be able to expand their living space with the building materials you discarded because they were faulty.

St. John’s Food for the Poor Program

Another charity that helps fight the hunger problem is St. John’s Food for the Poor Program at St. Francis Xavier Center. You can donate your excess food (that has to be within the expiration date) or you can even volunteer. If you consider your time to be something that you can donate, then this is a way to do it. Besides, is there a better way to spend your free time than by helping other people?

But St. John’s Food for the Poor Program accepts more than just food items. They accept toiletries for the homeless, lunch box for the working poor and plastic bags for takeout food. With 100 million pounds of edible food being thrown out each year, this is a way to do what’s in your power to reduce that number. Certainly, something to think about.

Do your own research for the best charities for donating extra belongings

There really are many of them! Every town usually has a place where you can take food, furniture, and clothing items you no longer need. All you have to do is conduct your own Internet research for the places in your vicinity. With so many communities in just one state, it’s clearly impossible for anyone to list all the organizations at your disposal. Only you can find the one that will work best for you.

In the end, there are so many charities for donating extra belongings that you don’t have to pick only one. After all, there is no such thing as overdoing it when donations are on the line. Just remember than donating is only acceptable when you are giving usable items. If not, it’s best to rent a dumpster and throw your items away.

We here at Grunts Move Junk and Moving Massachusetts would just like to salute you for your efforts to be charitable. Our country needs more people like that! Congratulations!
